SMU earns sixth win with 2-1 squeaker over Trojans

The SMU women’s soccer team posted their first win over a ranked team last Friday at Westcott Field when they defeated the No. 21 University of Southern California Women of Troy 2-1.

USC’s record fell to 4-3-1, while the Mustangs record improved to 6-3-1. Sophomore forward Kimber Bailey once again led the way for the Mustangs, taking half of the team’s 10 shots and scoring both SMU goals.

Her first came in the 19th minute when she put home a rebound off a Morgan Field free kick. She doubled the Mustangs’ lead in the 50th minute, stealing the ball from a USC defender and beating USC goalkeeper Veronica Simonton.

Both goals were unassisted. Bailey now has 10 goals and 22 points in nine games played this season.

The Women of Troy cut the lead in half in the 70th minute when Stacey Strong and Amy Rodriguez combined on a give-and-go. Strong put the ball past SMU freshman goalkeeper Ashley Gunter, who made two saves on the afternoon.

USC out-shot the Mustangs 12-10 for the game, but SMU put seven of their shots on goal while USC managed just three.

The Mustangs return to Westcott Field next Sunday when they open their first Conference-USA season against Tulsa at 3:30 p.m.
