For the first time in Dallas, students can see a special screening of the documentary “Brave Miss World” Wednesday April 10th and Friday April 12th.

The documentary focuses on the former Miss World Linor Abargil. Abargil was sexually assaulted by her travel agent shortly before the 1998 Miss World pageant.

After making her case public, her attacker was arrested, tried and convicted of rape. Since then, Abargil has been a global activist against sexual violence.

The SANE Initiative and The Monika Korra Foundation partnered with the makers of Brave Miss world to bring the documentary here to Dallas.

“The film explores trauma and stigma of sexual assault, through one woman’s inspiring journey,” SANE Initiative Executive Director Courtney Underwood said in a press release.

The SANE Initiative is a movement dedicated to giving Dallas a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).

The Monika Korra Foundation was created by SMU grad student Monika Korra who was raped and kidnapped by three strangers in 2009.

Two of the men were arrested and sentenced to life in prison and the other pled guilty in 2012 and is currently awaiting sentencing.

According to its website, The Monika Korra Foundation’s vision “is to kill the silence surrounding rape and abuse in society and make it possible for survivors to seek the help needed for complete healing.”

Both Korra and Underwood are members of the Task Force on Sexual Misconduct Policies and Procedure at SMU.

“We are very aware of the impact that sexual assault has had on campus at SMU and across the country on college campuses, something that the documentary touches on as well,” Underwood said.

The Task Force was created by SMU President R. Gerald Turner after the high-profile arrests of two SMU students for sexual assault.

The April 10th showing will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Magnolia 4 Theater. The showing is free to students with a valid student ID.

The April 12th showing will be at 4:30 p.m. at the Angelika 6 Theater.
