Senior Bamba Fall was honored Thursday night at the SMU men’s basketball team banquet at the Doubletree Hotel. Fall, the team’s only senior, is graduating in May.
“The honor that I’m most excited about for Bamba is that he is leaving with a degree from SMU,” head coach Matt Doherty said.
“I had a great time at SMU,” Fall said to the fans gathered at the banquet. “I feel like I just got here yesterday.”
Fall took a moment to acknowledge the SEEDS Academy in his speech. SEEDS Academy is an institution in Senegal that uses sports as a means to educate youth. SMU’s Fall, Papa Dia, and Mouhammad Faye are all SEEDS Academy graduates.
Fall, who is second on SMU’s career blocks list with 178, won more team awards (four) than any other player.
Fall was awarded the Rebounder, Defensive, and Screener awards as well as being named to the Conference USA Defensive Team.
In his brief address to the crowd, Doherty showed gratitude for the involvement of the fans and the alumni.
“It takes the support of people like you to get things moving in the right direction,” said Doherty. “Once we get their we will reap the rewards.”
Much attention was given to the future of the Mustang basketball program. Athletic Director Steve Orsini, in his opening remarks, acknowledged SMU’s Second Century Campaign, which will include the renovation of Moody Coliseum.
Doherty spoke of the difficulties of building a program, but made some bold statements about the current state.
“The first three years are tough,” said Doherty. “I think the tough part is behind us.”
It is clear from the words spoken at the banquet that the expectations for next season for this team are high.
“We’re looking to make a move next year,” Doherty emphasized to those listening.
When asked about winning a co-MVP award going into the off-season, Williams said, “It’s a great honor to even be a part of this team. I’m very blessed to be named co-MVP with Paul.”
In thinking ahead to his senior season, Williams said, “I have to step up to be a big leader next year. Everybody has to do their part.”
