The SMU men’s tennis team handed the men from TCU their fifth consecutive loss tonight in Fort Worth. The Mustangs, ranked No. 65, defeated the No. 66 Frogs 4-3. SMU is now 5-5 for the season.
SMU started off the match by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Federico Murgier and Alex Skrypko fell at No. 1 to Cosmin Cotet and Kriegler Brink 8-5. At No. 3, Chris Hooshyar and David Kuczer teamed up to beat Chris Biro and Caleb Bulls 8-1. Oivind Alver and Adolfo Solares secured the point with an 8-4 win over Andrew Ulrich and Stuart Row.
SMU lost the top three singles matches, with Murgier falling first at No. 3 to Brink, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 6, Hooshyar finished next with a win over Row, 6-2, 6-4.
No. 43 Skrypko managed to stretch the first set into a tiebreaker, but dropped straight sets to Cotet 7-6, (7-4), 6-4.
Kuczer also lost his match at No. 2 to Biro of TCU. The second set went to a tiebreaker, but Kuczer was unable to extend it into a third set. He lost the match 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Freshman Robin Faghen took another win at No. 4 singles, making him 3-0 at that position this season. He powered past Bulls 6-4, 6-0.
Alver clinched the victory for the Mustangs, finishing his match last. The junior went three sets with Ulrich, pulling it out at 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Mustangs begin conference play on March 11 when they host Tulsa at the Lakewood Country Club. SMU hosts one match against Columbia over Spring Break before heading to California for a two-match road-trip against San Francisco and the University of California – Berkeley.
