The No. 55 SMU women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 39-ranked TCU Wednesday at the Garland Tennis Center. The Mustangs are now 8-4 for the season while TCU improves to 7-4.
Playing without two starters, the Mustangs did their best to battle the Horned Frogs. Junior Natalia Bubien and sophomore Kristen Reid each sat out the match due to injuries. As a result, SMU started the match down one singles and one doubles match.
Senior Jennifer Chay, who spent her freshman year on the TCU squad before transferring to SMU, battled No. 104 Anna Sydorska. Chay was unable to top the ranked player, losing the match 6-4, 6-5.
In doubles, Chay paired with partner Pavi Francis at No. 1, falling to the No. 7 doubles team in the country, Sydorska and Ana Cetnik, 8-5. SMU’s Georgiana Marta and Claire Rietsch took on Nina Munch-Soegaard and Kewa Nichols at No. 2 doubles. The Frogs beat the Mustangs 8-3.
Rietsch and Francis played No. 2 and No. 3 singles for SMU. Rietsch lost in straight sets to No. 37 Ana Cetnik, 6-4, 6-2. Francis held out for three sets, but was unable to convert her efforts to a victory over No. 84 Munch-Soegaard. She finished the match third, losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Marta and Monica Neveklovska rounded out the singles lineup for the Mustangs. At No. 4, Marta finished just behind Reitsch and also lost in straight sets to TCU’s Nichols 6-2, 6-4.
TCU’s Andrea Morgado defeated Neveklovska in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The No. 5 singles match finished last for the day.
The SMU women’s tennis team heads to Houston this weekend to face conference opponent Houston. The Mustangs will then go to Little Rock, Ark., to take on both Arkansas-Little Rock and South Alabama. The women are back in Dallas on March 21 with a contest against Arkansas.
