The No. 52 SMU women’s tennis team advanced to 8-3 for the season after a shutout victory over New Mexico State on Saturday. The Mustangs defeated the Aggies 7-0, giving NMS its seventh loss of the season.
SMU clinched the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Georgiana Marta and Claire Rietsch finished first, getting the Mustangs off on the right foot. Rietsch and Marta took an 8-0 victory over Lindsey Green and Paulina Zuniga. Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid managed an 8-6 victory over Nicole Fintell and Zeljka Juricek. Jennifer Chay and Pavi Francis were unable to pull off a win at No. 1 doubles, but SMU had already secured the doubles point.
Absent from SMU’s roster was Natalia Bubien, who until late February played No. 1 singles. It is unknown why Bubien did not play against New Mexico State or whether she will appear against TCU on Wednesday.
Despite Bubien’s absence, the Mustangs swept singles play, winning all but one match in straight sets. NMS’ Green was unable to win even a single game off SMU’s No. 6 singles player Neveklovska, who won 6-0, 6-0.
Marta’s victory at No. 4 clinched the match for the Mustangs. The senior defeated Zuniga 6-0, 6-2.
Chay took her first win at No. 1 this season, improving her singles record to 5-4. The senior beat Zeljka of NMS in a third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-1, 10-2.
Rietsch earned her tenth win of the season over Nicole Fintell. The freshman overpowered the Aggie at the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-0.
Francis and Reid also took wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Francis’ 6-3, 6-3 victory improves her record to 10-2 for the season. Reid was the last to finish as she battled with Aleska Costa to 6-2, 6-4.
After hosting cross-town rival TCU on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Garland Tennis Center, the Mustangs start on a three-match road trip. SMU will face Houston, Arkansas-Little Rock and South Alabama between March 11 and 18.
