The No. 40 SMU women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend to face Lamar, Wichita State and Tulsa. The contest against Tulsa on Sunday is the Mustangs’ first conference match of the season. The team is 5-1 for the season, with its only loss coming from North Carolina State last weekend.
Mustang freshman Claire Reitsch was named the C-USA Tennis Player of the Week this week following her five wins in singles and doubles in the Mustangs’ last three matches. Reitsch, a native of Laguna Beach, Calif., is undefeated in singles this season and is 5-1 in doubles during dual matches with partner Natalia Bubien.
Bubien, who plays No. 1 for SMU, has a 4-2 record in dual matches. The sophomore fell to No. 16 Beirer Ko of Harvard and No. 43 Daria Petrovic, but she managed a victory over Ashley Ellis of Texas State.
The Mustangs did not play either Lamar or Wichita State last season, but they did face Tulsa in the regular season and again during the conference tournament. SMU hosted the Golden Hurricane during both matches and took the victory each time, ending the Golden Hurricane’s hopes of a conference championship in the semi-finals.
The Cardinals of Lamar are 4-2 this season, having suffered a loss at Louisiana-Lafayette last Thursday. Lamar has yet to host a match this season.
From Kansas come the undefeated Shockers. Ranked No. 55, Wichita State faced its first conference opponent last week, beating No. 75 Indiana State 6-1. WSU is part of the Missouri Valley Conference.
The women from Tulsa also come into this weekend undefeated. The Golden Hurricane is 9-0, and the team coming off a victory over No. 75 Indiana State. This is the first meeting between Tulsa and SMU this season.
After a busy weekend, the Mustangs return to Dallas on Feb. 27 to host Furman at the Brookhaven Country Club.
