In a long day of competition, the No. 70 SMU men’s tennis team hosted No. 16 Oklahoma State University and Centenary College at the Bent Tree Country Club on Saturday. After winning one and losing one, SMU is 7-9 for the season.

The Cowboys of OSU gave the Mustangs tough competition in the first of match of the day. Taking a 4-0 victory, the Cowboys advance to a 10-1 record this season.

After winning the doubles point, OSU only needed three singles victories, which they got at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6.

No. 67 Alex Skrypko fell to Oleksandr Nedovyesov 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. Skrypko scowled and chastised himself throughout the match.

At No. 2 for SMU, David Kuczer faced No. 21 Ivan Puchkarov. Kuczer seemed overpowered and outplayed in the first set, but he rallied to win the second. The match was called while Kuczer was ahead in the third set due to OSU’s victory.

Both Federico Murgier and Robin Faghen were headed for a third set when the match was called. Murgier played against OSU’s Daniel Byrnes at No. 3 while Faghen faced Nathan Byrnes at No. 5.

Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar both fell in straight sets to the their opponents. At No. 4, Alver struggled with his first serve and Dmytro Petrov took the win 6-4, 6-3. Hooshyar fell to Artsem Burmistrau 6-3, 6-0.

This is SMU’s eighth loss to a Top 35 team this season.

Later in the day, the Mustangs continued play as they took on the Gents of Centenary College. SMU swept Centenary 6-0, winning every singles match in two sets.

Skrypko and Murgier played No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, but head coach Carl Neufeld switched up the afternoon lineup.

Adolfo Solares defended the No. 3 position against Seva Kostelantz, 6-0, 6-2. Hooshyar moved up to play No. 4, earning a win over Gerry Lozano 6-0, 6-0.

Red-shirt freshman Ryan Hooker made his second regular season collegiate appearance against the Gents. He got a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jacob Dawson at No. 5.

There was no match played at the No. 6 position.

The Mustangs continue their nine-match home stand tomorrow when they host the University of Illinois-Chicago at the Bent Tree Country Club at 2 p.m. (weather permitting).

UIC is lead by Adriano Liccardo and Sebastian Lystad. Each has played No. 1 for UIC in recent matches. In doubles, Liccardo usually pairs with Bastian Harbo at No. 1.

Following tomorrow’s match, the Mustangs host another double-header on March 31, featuring the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Prairie View A&M.
