Even though they are now preparing for the World Championships, the SMU women’s swim team is still riding their victories from the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis March 8-10.
The Mustangs placed 14th and qualified 10 swimmers for All-American honors.
Both Anja Carman and Petra Klosova earned All-American status in individual events while the other eight SMU swimmers qualified in relays.
Carman placed ninth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.00 in the prelims. Her final finish of 14th place with a time of 1:57.04 qualified her for an individual All-American honor.
Teammate Klosova did just the opposite, placing 16th in the prelims of the 100-yard freestyle before finishing ninth in the finals. Klosova earned her All-American status with a final time of 48.50.
Klosova also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay with Jennifer Blackman, Leane Darling and Angela San Juan Cisneros, just one of the four relays that qualified for All-American honors. The 400-yard freestyle relay finished in seventh and consisted of Blackman, Darling, Klosova and Michelle Vlasakova while Blackman, Klosova, Celina Lemmen and Roberts swam the 800-yard freestyle relay. The final relay, the 400-medley relay, included Devon Callaghan, Carman, Klosova and Justine Clark.
Just after the NCAA Championships, C-USA announced its 2006-2007 Swimming and Diving All-Academic team. Of the six student athletes recognized, two of them were SMU swimmers: Jenny Basel and Celina Lemmen. Basel, a 2006 All-American, is a sophomore mathematics and mechanical engineering major. She holds a 3.98 GPA, the highest on the all-academic team. Fellow Mustang Lemmen enjoyed All-American status all four years on the SMU squad, qualifying in the 800-yard freestyle relay this season.
Next on the Mustangs’ schedule are the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia and the US National Championships in Long Island, N.Y.
