The Goucher College Board of Trustees announced that José Bowen, dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, will become the college’s 11th president, effective July 1.
Bowen is also serving at Meadows as a professor of music and the Algur H. Meadows Chair. He is a nationally award winning educator and author of “Teaching Naked.” The book advocates his philosophy of teaching without technology.
Goucher College, located in Baltimore, Md., requires all of its students to study abroad as part of shaping its students to become global citizens.
“I have been an outspoken advocate for innovation in higher education,” Bowen said in a press release, “and I am excited about using the framework of interdisciplinary education not only transform individual students’ lives, but to help change the way people think about value and uses of the liberal arts.”
Bowen will succeed Sanford J. Ungar, who became Goucher’s president in 2001. Ungar will step down June 30 to make way for Bowen.
Additional coverage of Bowen’s move will be forthcoming.
