Sigma Lambda Gamma members put their best feet forward Saturday night at the University of Texas at Arlington’s first Step Show Review.
The women of Sigma Lambda Gamma wanted to represent their sorority with a tribute to diversity through dance. The women of the sorority perform dances at their parties, so to prepare for their performance Saturday, they gathered pieces from their dances and put them all into one dance. Five members of the sorority danced to a mix of various hip-hop and Latino dance songs.
Other sororities and fraternities did various step routines with a combination of clapping and stomping, mixed with raps and rhymes about their letters.
The Review, which consisted of fraternities and sororities from The University of North Texas, UTA, and SMU, came together to help promote UTA’s newly founded Multicultural Greek Council.
The Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority is the only chapter in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They have more than 60 chapters in the nation, and six of those are located in Texas. UNT and UTA are hoping to raise the numbers by starting two more in Texas.
The Pi Chapter at SMU has five focuses it centers around: community service, social interaction, academics, cultural ethics and morals. SMU’s Multicultural Greek Council includes two sororities, Kappa Delta Chi and Sigma Lambda Gamma, and one fraternity, Omega Delta Phi.
The event this weekend was not only to promote UTA’s Greek Council, but to develop a sense of unity between the fraternities. Nina Zermino, a junior Sigma Lambda Gamma member, feels that this gathering was “long overdue.”
With sororities and fraternities all vying for potential members, Zermino says there is no need for any hostility with regard to competition for members.
“We are all at SMU, and are such a small number as it is,” she said.
The sorority, which recently added three new members after rush, now has 24 members.
After the show, the Pi chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma hosted “One Nation,” an upbeat party for all sororities and fraternities at the event. This was one more “step” in Sigma Lambda Gamma’s plan to promote unity to other sororities and fraternities.
