The SMU women’s golf team took second place in the C-USA Tournament this weekend, and senior Jennifer Ackerson placed second individually. Head coach Todd Selders was also named C-USA Coach of the Year.

“We did pretty well,” Ackerson said. “Everyone had a good round.”

This is the Mustangs’ best finish since 1992 when they won the Southwest Conference Title. This year, SMU came up 10 shots short of beating tournament winner East Carolina.

“East Carolina beat us every day,” Ackerson said. “ECU had the home-course advantage.”

But when asked if she thought SMU could beat them at a neutral site?

“Absolutely,” Ackerson said.

“This is a good conference, and we can absolutely win it next year.”

Individually, Ackerson shot a final-round of 74 to finish at 1-over 217 and took second. Ackerson’s showing earned her All-Tournament Team honors and was the best finish for a Mustang since Barbara Blackwell won the 1992 Southwest Conference title.

The Mustangs had three golfers finish in the top 20 of the tournament, including Ackerson, Lacey Jones at seventh and Kate Ackerson at twelfth.

Jones shot 6-over 222, and Kate Ackerson shot a 1-over 73 to finish at 10-over 226 and tie for 12th.

Five SMU golfers were named All-Conference, led by first-team selections Cross and Jones. Jennifer Ackerson and Rothengatter were chosen for second-team, while Kate Ackerson was a third-team pick.

This is Coach Selders’s second time in his six years at SMU to be named conference Coach of the Year.

The women are now preparing for NCAA Regionals in College Station May 11-13, where SMU is seeded seventh.

Ackerson said the biggest competition for that tournament will be Tulsa, UTEP and ECU.
