Get ready to jump, jive and swing as the Meadows Jazz Orchestra goes back to the 1930s and ‘40s for a night of dancing and live music.
The Meadows Jazz Orchestra will hold its first ever swing dance concert “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing” at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 in the Taubman Atrium in the Owen Arts Center.
Dylan Smith is the director of the Meadows Jazz Orchestra, a 25-member ensemble composed of SMU students selected by audition each fall.
“For the past couple of years I have daydreamed about the Meadows Jazz Orchestra traveling back in time and the atrium turning into a ‘speak easy’ bringing together, musicians, dancers, students, staff, faculty, and community members for an incredibly fun evening at Meadows,” said Smith.
There will be a dance lesson led by local swing dance experts Emily Spraggins and Matthew Edwards. The introductory lesson will give anyone the opportunity to learn how to swing dance in less than an hour.
The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. after the dance lesson concludes. The evening will feature the music of the great swing era big bands: Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Woody Herman and more.
The price to attend is $5, or $3 with an SMU I.D.
