The SMU Meadows Dance Ensemble will premiere new choreography for Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird,” by noted Mexican choreographers Claudia Lavista and Victor Manuel Ruiz, this weekend at the Bob Hope Theatre.
Lavista is the recipient of numerous national and international awards. She has performed worldwide and created more than 45 works for companies throughout North America. Ruiz is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and lighting designer whose 30-year career includes numerous awards in each category.
Their “Firebird” choreography exemplifies the work of their company, Delfos Danza Contemporanea, a collection of artists and educators dedicated to new ideas, new approaches and new forms.
The Spring Dance Concert will also feature the classic work of Martha Graham’s “Appalachian Spring” as well as an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique set to Tchaikovsky’s “Pas de Deux.”
The concert will take place at the Bob Hope Theatre, which is located inside SMU’s Owen Arts Center on Bishop Boulevard. Performances are scheduled to take place 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for SMU students, faculty and staff. Free parking is available at Hillcrest or Binkley Parking Center, as well as in the garage under the Meadows Museum.
If unable to attend the concert this weekend, “The Firebird as well as Appalachian Spring” will be offered again at the Winspear Opera House May 11 at 8 p.m. for “Meadows at the Winspear,” the annual fundraising event for the Meadows School of the Arts.
