POLICE REPORT: April 5, 9:26 a.m. An officer observed numerousstudents sleep-walking past the flagpole on their way to class. Thestudents were found to be severely exhausted due to the loss of onehour of sleep caused by the daylight saving time.
Yes, as a matter of fact, the precise moment occurred on Sundaymorning at 2 a.m., when clocks across the United States were set anhour ahead, in observance of the customary time change. The timesprung forward, but many of us were left dazed and confused, wondering what had just happened. Your body didn’t get thememo.
Like previous years, some of us managed to add yet anotherdaylight saving time story to our list of embarrassing moments. Thanks to this bizarre practice, somewhere during our lives,we’ve all either arrived an hour early or an hour late to anagreed engagement.
Yet after all the years, the time change still remains one ofthose things that people just never really get used to. Some of usget really frustrated with the whole thing, leading us to ponderthe purpose of daylight saving time, and how ridiculous it reallyis. Lets analyze the idea closely. We gain the hour in the springonly to lose it in the fall.
We only have one question — why?
Beside the extra daylight in the summer, does the concept reallymake sense?
But to understand the reasoning, one must venture back to 1918when daylight saving time was initially set up in the UnitedStates. It was created during World War I as a method of preservingenergy.
To no surprise, many people were not very happy about it then. This led to the law getting removed in 1919, only to bereintroduced in 1966. After all this time, the excuse about energysaving can no longer be used.
Daylight saving time now has more to do with a few extra hoursof sunlight for recreational activities. Another beneficial aspectof daylight saving time has to do with the idea that it takes abite out of crime.
Since a lot of criminal activities occur during the night, crimerates tend to decline thanks to daylight saving time.
So try to be happy about daylight saving time since it will bewith us for a while. Find something worthwhile to do with thatextra hour.
