Seeing as how the Editorial Board writes a column every day, it gives it many opportunities to present its skewed opinions of life as the Gospel to the world. I am a sophmore and I’ve read The Daily Campus every day since I’ve been here and to many people’s surprise I find it to be a pretty decent newspaper. But the one section that is consistently wrong and often times mean-spirited is the editorial section.

I have never seen such an abuse of power as I did in the Jan. 29 editorial concerning ex-Robert McDonough. The editorial board took it upon itself to publicly denounce the way McDonough resigned. The editorial response to his letter was completely uncalled for and seemingly vindictive. Unless there’s something I don’t know about, say maybe he snogged somebody’s mom on the Editorial Board, there was no reason for such a personally harsh editorial.

McDonough wrote a letter stating what he felt was wrong with the system and that since he was no longer of any use to it, he felt it necessary to resign. He was called a coward for resigning instead of starting an uprisal and changing the Senate. The thing that the Editorial Board ignorantly forgot was that even though he wanted to help make changes in Senate, he wasn’t getting paid attention to, making it impossible to make such changes.

Sure, he could’ve stayed in the Senate, remaining unsatisfied and becoming jaded like so many other public officials. Instead he nobly stepped down, allowing a vacant spot to hopefully be filled by an individual who still posseses the fire he once had.

Perhaps if the Editorial Board had really read McDonough’s resignation it could’ve understood his reasons for resigning. But the bottom line is not a single person on the Editorial Board knows exactly why McDonough resigned, so they should get off their self-righteous soapboxes and go back to being wrong about things that don’t personally hurt a student at this school.

This letter is most likely in vain however, because the Board would rather just sit behind its title, criticize the people actually trying to make a difference, all while not having the courage to even sign their individual names to their opinions.
