Gay marriage debate
Dear editor:
I had a whole big opinion letter written up about how ridiculousSwede Hanson’s anti-gay marriage opinion was (in the March 30issue of The Daily Campus), until, luckily for me, ChristinaLeone’s column came out in Wednesday’s paper.
She’s right on when she argues that gays are indeedfighting for the same equal rights and recognition as humans thatblacks fought for in the Civil Rights movement. She’s righton when she acknowledges the real love between gay couples thatwant to marry. And she’s definitely right on when sheargues against changing the Constitution as a beacon of freedom forour country.
Besides, the passing of an amendment restricting freedom ofmarriage when an Equal Rights Amendment has been proposed twiceand has failed both times would make me pack up and move… probably to my own little island where I could governmyself. That would be a sad day.
I would only add, in contradiction to Hanson’s column, that gays are not challenging the social structure and moral orderof our society — they are trying to place themselves backinto a structure and order that has so rudely kicked them out as”others.” Women and minorities were both once seen asdisrupting social and moral order, and we could not call them”others” today — nor should we call gays”others” today.
