The women’s tennis team, ranked 42nd in the nation with a12-7 record, defeated both Louisiana Tech and Abilene ChristianUniversity on Monday by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, respectively.
The victories also bumped the Ponies’ home record to 9-2,a good step toward breaking a two-year WAC Championship streak bythe Fresno State Bulldogs.
Senior Kit Carson dominated, taking her singles matches byscores of 6-1 and 6-1 in the team’s first conference winagainst Louisiana Tech.
Carson’s record this year now stands at 16-8, and she hasaccumulated a total of 62 career singles wins. She is ninth on theall-time SMU list.
Along with Carson, junior Jenny Langer led the Mustangs doublesattack that night against ACU. The pair combined for an 8-1victory.
Another notable performance came from sophomore SvetlanaKouzmenko, who wowed the afternoon crowd with a straight setsingles victory against Louisiana Tech. The Minsk, Belarus nativethen improved her record to 19-5 on the year with singles wins of6-1 and 6-0 at the hands of ACU.
Monday’s match against Louisiana Tech marked the firsttime that assistant coach Lauren Longbotham had faced her almamater since graduating in 2003.
The Mustangs will return to action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday nightwhen they travel to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears.
