The No. 48 SMU women’s tennis team ended its season with a 7-0 shutout of UTEP on Saturday. The Mustangs went 19-4 overall for the season and 3-1 in conference play.
SMU’s victory over the Miners sends the team into the C-USA Championships on an 11-match winning streak, beating last year’s streak of 10 consecutive wins.
Seniors Jennifer Chay and Georgiana Marta were honored at the home match of their collegiate careers. Head Coach Lauren Longbotham called the season-ending match “bittersweet” for her squad.
The Mustangs began the day with three straight doubles wins. Sophomores Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid finished their match first at No. 3 with an 8-2 win. Chay and partner Pavi Francis paired up one last time at No. 2 for regular season play. The duo clinched its 14th win of the year at 8-4 over Isabela Kulaif and Marina Deluca.
Finishing last was the No. 1 doubles team of Natalia Bubien and Claire Reitsch. They earned an 8-3 win over Weronkia Bloczynska and Megan Pritchard.
Bubien met Blocczynska again during the No. 1 singles match. The Mustang closed the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Her partner, Reitsch, also won her match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Deluca.
Both of the seniors took wins on their final day of the regular season. Chay downed Kulaif 6-4, 4-6 (10-3) at No. 2 while Marta ended Samantha Attard’s six-match winning streak at the No. 5 position.
Reid and Neveklovska followed suit, securing a shutout for the Mustangs. At No. 4, Reid toppled Megan Pritchard in two sets, 6-1, 6-2. Neveklovska defended the bottom of the lineup, winning 6-4, 6-1 over Harmonie Chatagner.
With the regular season over, SMU moves into post-season play. The Mustangs travel to Tulsa, Okla., later this week to participate in the C-USA Championships. Last year, top-seeded SMU fell in the championship match to seventh-seeded Rice. It is likely the Mustangs will take a top-two seed in the tournament again this year.
