Apparently being one of the best golfers at SMU in his four years here wasn’t enough for Colt Knost. Earlier this week, Knost qualified for the Byron Nelson, a PGA event in Dallas.

It took all 18 holes and then some for Knost to qualify for the professional event.

Knost was in a three-way tie for the final two spots after shooting a 65 for the round. He was tied with Michael Allen and Michel Boyd after the first 18 holes with just two of the four spots remaining.

Wasting no time, Knost took care of business early. On the first playoff hole he made a 10-foot birdie putt, earning a place as one of four winners in the qualifying tournament.

Not only was Knost the only amateur to qualify for the Nelson, he was the only amateur to finish in the top 45.

But Knost wasn’t the only Mustang to make it in the tournament.

Scott Abbott, a 2005 SMU graduate, also qualified for his first PGA Tour event. And 1999 graduate Hank Kuehne, former US Amateur Champion, is also in the field.

The EDS Byron Nelson will take place Thursday through Sunday in Las Colinas at the Four Seasons.
