Amber Campisi. What does the name mean to you? A prominentdisplay of modern female beauty and power? Or an embarrassingproduct of the SMU community?
Miss Campisi, a recent graduate of SMU, has had her name andface (not to mention bare body) splashed all over the media.
The spotlight found her after a stint in Playboy magazine andwas followed by a slew of articles in other publications. Ed. Boardis wondering how this kind of publicity reflects on MissCampisi’s alma mater.
SMU has been in the national spotlight a lot lately — mostof the attention resulting in negative exposure. A certain cookiebake sale, a water-induced hazing incident, OSU setting a newtouchdown record against the Ponies…these are all recentexamples of the publicity SMU has received.
We do not need another shameful headliner calling attention to a2003 graduate of SMU who is making her mark in the world bybartending and posing nude in a less-than-respectful magazine.
In addition to just giving the University a bad rap, this couldpossibly affect future donations and endowments. Not very manypeople want to write six-digit checks to institutions that producerowdy frat boys, dismal football records and scantily cladmodels.
So why are we not hearing any stories of SMU graduates that makeus proud?
They are out there, you know, these stellar alumnae.
As you read this, ex-Mustangs are thriving in the nation’stop medical schools, etching out successful careers as lawyers, andrunning some of the top corporations. And that’s just tomention a few of the ways society is benefiting from ourgraduates.
It seems like many of our graduates’ major accomplishmentsare swept under the rug and forgotten, never making it to print.Yet the buzz about Miss Campisi is still thick in the air, castinga dark cloud over SMU’s reputation with her not being theideal representative of the University.
Perhaps there is something to be learned from our Amber Campisi. After all, she has consistently managed to do something very fewalumnae have: get her name in the paper.
Our hats off to you, Amber, your name has graced The DailyCampus once again.
