Big 12 is small potatoes
To many, the selection of the NCAA basketball tournament field was a confirmation of the best basketball conference in the land. At least it was to Dallas Morning News sports columnist Kevin Blackistone who in his opening paragraph in the Monday edition wrote:
“We learned Sunday which college basketball conference is considered the best in America. The Big 12. Who said it was a football conference?”
In the words of long time football announcer and longer time idiot Lee Corso, not so fast my friend.
Blackistone was correct about one thing; the best basketball conference does typically get recognized for their prowess on the gridiron as opposed to the hardwood: the Southeastern Conference.
A close look at the numbers reveals this claim to be more than just a sweeping generalization but rather a dose of reality:
According to the Associated Press poll, the Big 12 had zero teams ranked number one in the country the entire season while the SEC had three (Alabama, Florida and Kentucky).
Had the Georgia Bulldogs not declared themselves ineligible for the NCAA tournament, the SEC would have had seven teams in the big dance to the Big 12’s six. (Butler or BYU, not Alabama, would have been the logical choice for teams that would have been left out had Georgia not withdrawn from consideration. This is due to the fact that they are the worst seeded at-large teams in the field.)
The Ratings Power Index, a computer program that is used by the NCAA tournament selection committee as the most accurate judge of teams, rates the SEC as the best conference in the nation over the Big 12 (.5807 to .5791).
Big 12 champ Oklahoma lost only six games the entire season. They faced SEC schools twice. These match-ups both ended in defeat, a 68-62 loss to Alabama and a 54-45 loss to Mississippi St.
Regular season Big 12 champion Kansas lost only seven games the entire season. They faced an SEC school once. This ended in an 83-73 defeat to Florida.
LSU, which finished sixth in the SEC, defeated the number one ranked Arizona Wildcats 66-65. On the other hand in the Big 12’s meetings with Arizona both ended in defeat as Texas lost 73-70 and Kansas got blown out 91-74.
The computers rate the SEC as the best, the polls rate the SEC as the best, and finally to all of the people who say what happens on the floor matters the most, the head-to-head match-ups, say the SEC is the best.
I am sure Mr. Blackistone, like others, got all excited when he saw that the Big 12 was awarded two No. 1 seeds and a No. 2 seed in the tournament and simply jumped to a conclusion that the Big 12 is the best. Hopefully, this common misconception can finally be put to rest. The SEC is where real baskketball is played.
