Buildings evacuated due to possible gas leak

After a report of the smell of a possible gas leak near Airline Road and Dyer Street, SMU activated the university’s emergency response system. SMU evacuated the Dawson Service Center, SMU Service House, part of the the Lyle School of Engineering.

At the request of Atmos Energy, the rest of Lyle plus the fraternity houses, the Blanton Service Center, and 43 houses on McFarlin Boulevard and Fondren Drive between Airline Road and Dublin Street were also evacuated.

After two hours of searching Atmos was unable to find a source of the gas smell. At that time the evacuations were ended.

SMU also experienced a lack of hot water during the time that the university’s gas supply was turned off. As of now the gas is back on, but the cause of the initial small remains under investigation. Full story tomorrow in The Daily Campus and on SMU-TV’s Daily Update.
