Since their creation in early June, BLM@SMU has been working to create several on-campus events in support of Black Lives Matter to help students get involved with the movement.
“Our three goals as a team are changing campus culture, helping students participate in the BLM movement and uplifting, amplifying and celebrating black lives and black voices,” student organizer Tyne Dickson said.
If you want to get involved, here are a few events happening this week:
1. Pick-up some apparel and get to know the organizers on Thursday
On Thursday, Sept. 3rd at 11 a.m., you can pick up some apparel and meet the community at the SMU flagpole. Organizers will be there to answer questions and discuss the movement. BLM@SMU believes that “the shirts are a good way to outwardly make a statement about Black Lives Matter.” Over the summer, BLM@SMU’s GoFundMe raised $15,000 to help fund the apparel and other materials necessary for their events.

2. Make some posters with friends on Friday
On Friday, Sept. 4th at 6 p.m., you can join the BLM@SMU team on Dallas Hall Lawn to make posters for the upcoming march on Saturday. You can bring some blankets, snacks and friends to participate in the event. Poster making is only one of a few ways to send a message and be involved in the national movement. BLM@SMU hopes this activity will act as a “community builder event for the march.”

The march will begin near the Highland Park Methodist Church and will continue around campus. Anyone and everyone is welcome to march, as long as they respect the organization’s COVID-19 protocols, which include social distancing and obligatory masks.
As an organizer, Tyne Dickson has confirmed that the organization has been in contact with SMU PD and will provide private security escorts for the march.
