The SMU women’s basketball team accomplished something it hadn’t done in three years by completing a WAC road trip sweep, beating the Boise State Broncos 63-57 in Boise on Saturday. “These wins were real confidence builders,” said junior Sarah Davis, “we are a young team and it’s big for the rest of the WAC race to know that we can get victories on the road.” Before the trip the Mustangs were only 2-2 in true road games while being 11-2 in home or neutral site contests, but the victories moved the Mustangs to an overall record of 15-4 and a second-place tie in the WAC at 6-3.
SMU jumped all over the Broncos from the outset opening with a 10-0 run to start the game before increasing its lead to 16 in the second half. The Mustangs had balanced scoring throughout the game with Katie Gross leading the team with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the three-point line. Janielle Dodds had a double-double, grabbing a team-leading 13 rebounds to go along with 13 points. Freshman Katy Cobb added 11 points and Shonte Roberts had a strong effort off the bench with 10 points on four- of-five shooting from the field.
The Mustangs once again relied on their stingy defense to wreak havoc on their opponent’s shooting. SMU held the Broncos to 32.4 percent shooting from the field, lowering the Mustangs’ conference-leading field goal percentage defense to 34.5 percent, eighth in the nation. Kendall Shead also opportunistically picked up two steals to go along with her eight points and nine rebounds from her point guard position. The Mustangs got a pair of huge stops in the closing minutes after the Broncos cut the lead to four at 57-53, the closest it had been since the game stood at 4-0 during the team’s initial run.
The Mustangs return home Thursday night to avenge one of their conference losses when the Nevada Wolf Pack comes to town.
