The SMU men’s soccer team traveled to Berkley, Calif. this weekend to compete in the Cal Legacy Classic. Though the Mustangs did not win the tournament, they proved once again that they are one of the top teams in the country.
The Mustangs started their tournament against Stanford on Friday. SMU got on the board fast as Stanford recorded an own goal in the second minute of the game to give theMustangs the lead. It did not take long for the Mustangs to get their insurance goal as a Stanford penalty in the fourth minute gave SMU a penalty kick that senior Paulo da Silva converted for his second goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Craig Hill posted his second shutout of the season. Hill worked well with the defense as none of Stanford’s six shots were on goal.
The second game for SMU was one that pitted two Top 10 teams against each other as No. 7 SMU took on No. 8 Cal.
This game proved to be all that it was hyped to be as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
Paulo da Silva got his third goal in four games as he headed a cross from freshman Payton Hickey past the Cal keeper in the 48th minute.
The game stayed tied until the 82nd minute when the Golden Bears tied the game on A.J. Soares goal. The two teams battled for two extra periods with no goals before the game ended in a tie.
The Mustangs did not win the tournament since the tie breaker, measured by goal differential, went to Cal. However, head Coach Tim McClements was still happy about the play.
“It was a tough trip, we learned a lot about ourselves.” He went on to say, “we know where we stand and feel good about it, we also know we can improve.”
The game against Cal was especially hard for the Mustangs.
“We battled the entire game,” said McClements, “we were not able to get into a rhythm but I don’t think we allowed them to get into one either.”
Hill, da Silva and defender Leone Cruz were all named to the all-tournament team.
da Silva was also named conference player of the week. He had two goals in two games this week and has a total of 8 points for the season
The Mustangs will now return home for their first home game of the season on Friday as they host the Prego’s Express Italian Men’s Soccer Invitational. In the first game the Mustangs will take on George Mason at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs will finish their weekend on Saturday with a match against Oakland.
