Program Council’s Harambee Week finishes today with amovie screening and organizers are hoping to build on crowds thathave been increasing throughout the week.
“We started a good number of people at our events so far,but we would like to see even more at the movie,” saidMychael Chinn, chairman of PCs Black Awareness Week.
Coming to America, the 1988 film starring Eddie Murphy, will cap off a week filled with discussion and socializing withother students.
“We thought the movie would be a fun way to end ourprogram. It’s a classic comedy that everyone can laugh at andrelate to,” said Chinn.
The film begins at 7 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Theater.
Monday and Tuesday’s events were opportunities for groupdiscussions and a guest lecturer.
Monday’s self-esteem workshop allowed students to discusstheir strengths and ideas for a support system at college.
Tuesday featured Dr. Maria Dixon from the CorporateCommunications and Public Affairs Division. She held a lecture anddiscussion regarding gossip and its negative effects within thecommunity.
“It was a great chance for people to think about what theysay and how it affects other people…those who attended got alot out of the event and that’s our goal,” said Chinn.”Dr. Dixon was a really dynamic speaker who added a lot toour schedule.”
Last night was a chance for the SMU community to take a breakfrom classes and papers.
“Kick Off Ya Shoes and Relax Ya Feet” was in theHughes-Trigg Promenade from 7-9 p.m. Students played spades, dominoes and other games that allowed chances to meet new peopleand socialize with old friends.
Chinn hopes that the week’s worth of programs andactivities helped students take away something that theydidn’t know about themselves before.
“It’s about coming together as a community andgetting to know everyone a little bit better,” he said.
