Perseverance finally pays off

Also over the break, Congress voted to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Since the 1990s, the law has kept openly gay men and women from serving in the armed forces.

This was a major victory for civil rights and there are many who deserve praise for their dedication to this cause, but especially worthy of recognition are: Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress who made the bill a chief legislative priority, the Republicans who went against their party leaders to vote for repeal, and, most of all, the soldiers, gay and straight, who have served and will continue to serve their country so courageously. We all owe them our deepest thanks.
