Over the weekend, SMU volleyball [9-10. 3-6 WAC] dipped intotheir first overall losing record of the season.
With losses to Nevada [30-28, 30-21, 30-27] and Fresno State[30-28, 30-18, 30-18] — both three game sweeps — SMUslipped even further from their goal of peaking at the WACChampionships.
During the team’s road trip, one of the only highlightswas senior outside hitter Beth Karasek’s 13th double-doubleof the season against Nevada.
In the match against Fresno State, Karasek missed adouble-double for the first time in conference play thisseason.
Head coach Lisa Seifert said earlier this season that theteam’s goal is to be at its best in the WAC Championships inthe middle of November.
After this weekend’s performances, it doesn’t seemthe team is getting close to that goal.
In the game against Nevada [14-6, 7-2 WAC] on Thursday, Karasektotaled 19 kills and 13 digs and a .286 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs hit well below Karasek’s average as a teamwith a .125, .178 and .044 hitting percentage in the first, secondand third games, respectively against the Wolfpack.
Saturday’s game against Fresno State [11-10, 4-5 WAC] wasbetter, but still not enough.
Along with Karasek’s first double-double miss inconference play, the Mustangs hit .333, .024 and .211 percent inthe three game sweep — not enough to beat the Bulldogs thathit .311 percent overall in the match.
On the positive side, Karasek’s 19 kills against Nevadaand 22 kills against Fresno State put her at 1314 career kills— third in SMU history passing Kelly Klecka for third place.Klecka previously held third place with 1311 kills.
Junior setter Jessica Mihm recorded a double-double againstFresno state with 10 digs and 38 assists. She missed adouble-double against Nevada with five digs and 40 assists.
The Mustang volleyball team will attempt to avenge thisweekend’s losses on Thursday with a home game against a toughNo. 26 Rice [19-3, 8-1 WAC] at Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m.
