The SMU men’s soccer team continues its Conference USA schedule Saturday against the University of Central Florida’s Golden Nights.
Central Florida, which comes into the game on a three game skid, is 3-3-0 in conference. That puts them in the No. 4 spot in the standings, two spots ahead of SMU.
The Golden Knights are led on offense by Kevan George, who has four goals and an assist. George, a freshman from Georgia, has started every game for UCF.
On the other end of the field, UCF has Sean Johnston in goal. Johnston, who is part of the Jamacian National Team, has allowed just 18 goals this season while managing 71 saves and four shutouts.
The Mustangs’ offense finally picked up Wednesday against the UAB Blazers. Freshman forward Diogo de Almeida scored two goals to lead the Mustangs to their first conference win, which brought them out of the bottom spot in the standings.
The Mustangs, however, have just 10 goals in their last eight games. Five of those came in a Nov. 12 win against Central Arkansas.
The Mustangs’ offense hopes to get a boost from the return of Paulo da Silva, who has been rumored to be coming back for the last couple of weeks.
Despite missing approximately a month, da Silva still is the leading scorer for the Mustangs. He has 12 points in nine games, while SMU’s next leading scorer, de Almeida, has 10 in fourteen games.
The Mustangs’ defense, led by team captain Daniel Lopez, has been playing strong in recent weeks and seems to be adjusted to teams playing over the top. At the start of conference play teams would play over the top, which simply means they would kick the ball over SMU’s defense to create scoring chances.
