The Mustangs saw their longest winning streak of the season, capitalizing on a four game series before dropping their first Conference USA game of the season to Marshall. With wins over the University of North Texas, Dartmouth, Virginia Tech, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and TCU, SMU tipped off conference play with a 67-56 home victory over the University of Tulsa on Jan. 3.

The Mustangs (9-7, 2-1) play their first conference road game at 2 p.m. Sunday against Tulsa (2-1, 5-101).

In SMU’s second consecutive win over TCU, the Mustangs passed the .500 mark for the first time on the season. Despite receiving only two points from Gilliam in the first half, the team’s leading scorer sunk seven field goals and two long range shots, in the second half.

SMU’s first C-USA win of the season resulted in a 67-56 victory over the Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa on Jan. 3. With the addition of four straight wins, SMU improved to 8-7 overall.

Four Mustangs made it into double-digit scores, including three perfect performances from the line. Gaining just six points from their bench, the Mustangs were led by Samuels, Elliott, Day and Gilliam on both ends of the ball.

The Mustangs previously lost to the Golden Hurricanes in both conference match-ups last season, but defeated Tulsa in the C-USA Tournament. Returning to Dallas with the same roster from last season, Tulsa had only two players reach double figures, shooting just 37 percent from the field.

Snapping their four game win steak in a 70-63 loss to Marshall despite three Mustangs posting double-digit scores. SMU struggled in rebounds though, pulling down just 31 boards to the Herd’s 51.

The Mustangs hit only 35 percent of their field goals in their first loss of conference play and drained only 56 percent of their free throws. Marshall shot 71 percent from the line and 47 percent from the field.

SMU got back on the winning track with an 80-73 win over 10-6 East Carolina Saturday afternoon in Moody.
