From Australia to Xalapa, the possibilities of studying abroad were introduced to the numerous students who attended the Study Abroad Open House Wednesday evening at McFarlin Auditorium.
SMU offers a variety of study abroad options, ensuring that students who desire to continue their education outside of the United States will be able to fulfill their wishes.
Nancy Simmons, an employee of SMU’s Study Abroad office, recommended that students explore the options of studying abroad, saying that, “Most students come back saying that is was a life changing experience, and 99 percent say it is the best thing they’ve done in their life. It makes them citizens of the world.”
SMU-in-Britain offers students the opportunity to spend an entire academic year studying in Great Britain, and interested applicants can enroll in various schools throughout the country according to their interests and majors.
Semester-long programs include locations in Australia, Copenhagen, Paris and Spain. Students reside with local families in all of the programs except Australia, an experience that gives the student an insider’s view of what life is really like in these new cultures.
Perhaps the most extensive range of programs is included in SMU’s summer study abroad.
There is a communications course in London, as well as the opportunity for SMU students to study at Oxford University.
“I think I would like to go to SMU-in-Oxford, because I have never had the opportunity to go outside of the United States and I think this would be a great chance to experience the culture of a country in a way that others will never be able to. You get to become a part of it instead of just a tourist,” first-year Rachel Shirey said.
Weimar, Germany is the destination for those seeking to discover German culture. The program there offers courses in everything from history to language and music.
There are also two different programs in France, along with three in Italy.Mexico and China are also represented on the list of opportunities for summertime programs, and the exchange program also allows students to attend universities in both Japan and China at different times throughout the academic year.
Trips to China and Russia are available during all three semesters. The program in Russia focuses on language proficiency and growth.
SMU’s Study Abroad office is located in the Laura Lee Blanton Building.
Staff members will provide students with information about the programs, as well as guidance about any logistical or financial details of the trips.
