The Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) held its fifth annual Pho Night on Sunday, providing food and entertainment for around 70 students, faculty and staff at The Varsity in Hughes-Trigg.
Many VSA members dressed in traditional Vietnamese clothing, and said the festivities gave them the opportunity to educate SMU about Vietnamese history and culture, while raising money for the group and its philanthropic efforts in the Dallas area.
The VSA’s executive members, all students, planned the evening, complete with live performances, a video comedy on how to make pho (pronounced “fuh”), a traditional Vietnamese noodle dish, and games. The menu consisted of egg rolls, homemade pho and a Vietnamese dessert.
Cultural and culinary curiosity brought sophomore Alex Haynes to the event.
“I happen to like Vietnamese food,” Hayes said, “so a Vietnamese food night on campus sounded pretty good to me.”
Hayes also had plenty to say about the entertainment.
“It was great,” Hayes said. “You can tell they worked pretty hard on this.”
According to VSA President, senior Diem Chau, Pho Night is their largest fundraiser of the year.
She explained that in the past, the VSA has tutored students at local elementary schools and held a Christmas party for them every year.
