Turnovers and a lack of offense once again led to a 39-10 SMU defeat on Saturday night in El Paso.
The Miners’ offense flourished with 544 total offense yards, 410 of those yards coming through the air. That led to 36 points for UTEP while the Mustangs managed 10 points from 255 total offense yards.
Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell returned from his injury against Memphis and started the game going 9-24 for 95 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by Logan Turner at halftime. Turner didn’t fair much better completing four of 12 passes for 42 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
The Mustangs also lost two fumbles giving them six turnovers in the game. Those six turnovers led to 20 UTEP points.
The Mustangs were unable to force any UTEP turnovers.
Zach Zimmerman led receivers with four catches for 49 yards and Bradley Haynes caught the only touchdown pass of the game, a 27-yard pass from Turner late in the fourth quarter.
UTEP quarterback Trevor Vittatoe set the tone early. On the Miners’ first play of the game he found Kris Adams for an 85-yard touchdown pass to take the early lead and never look back.
Vittatoe finished the game with 410 yards and three touchdowns.
UTEP kicker Jose Martinez helped with five field goals ranging from 23 to 48 yards.
SMU’s kicker Thomas Morstead got the Mustangs on the board with a 39-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Morstead also hit four of his five punts inside the 20-yard line.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 1-10 for the second straight season. SMU will have next week off before returning to the field Nov. 29 against Southern Miss.
