As the Beach Boys best put it, “Be true to your school.” Well that is exactly what Sean Schulgen is doing. Ten years after he first set foot on the SMU campus Schulgen is now making a name for himself in the business world.
Schulgen, president and CEO of Mustang Leasing Company, is working to find SMU students a place to live. In addition to his services being completely free to students, he also offers a rebate of up to 10 percent of his total commission.
Today, he will be on campus from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. answering questions outside of Hughes-Trigg.
A group of SMU students first met Sean about four months ago. Although they met at a social function, they said within a few minutes they had themselves a realtor.
Within days, Schulgen and the group met for lunch to discuss possible housing situations. They seemed to have some solid places lined up already, but things didn’t work out as expected.
Mustang Leasing searched, looking for that perfect place for the group to call their “crib.” The men looked for houses at White Rock Lake, condos uptown, and everything in between, but all of their negotiation tactics fell short. No one was willing to take a chance on five college-aged guys.
Despite his frustration, the men said Schulgen put his efforts into overdrive. He made it loud and clear that he would not stop until his clients were satisfied. They looked at condos, apartments, duplexes and too many houses to count. Then they got the call. Schulgen was certain he had found them a place.
“When we pulled up to our new place, it seemed to be glowing. It just felt right. When I saw the smile on Sean’s face, I knew something special was about to happen,” Preston Phillips said.
The group said now that they have found a place, they are planning to buy a a pool table and basketball goal with the 10 percent rebate on Schulgen’s commission.
Phillips said that the group has since recommended Mustang Leasing to many of their friends.
“When we started off, Schulgen was our realtor, now he is a lot more than that. I am proud to call Sean my friend,” Brian Bailey, one of the roommates said.
Schulgen a native of Kerrville, Texas, was an undergraduate student at SMU from 1994 to 1998. During this time, he played for the football team, was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After receiving a master’s degree in business from the University of Virginia, he is currently pursuing his second master’s degree at SMU in liberal arts.
