Kappa Alpha Theta is hosting its second annual KATS Making Tracks Theta 5K tomorrow morning.
“We’ve raised over $30,000, it’s the largest philanthropy event on SMU’s campus [besides Relay for Life],” Devon Myers said. “Obviously it’s great for our philanthropy CASA.”
Court-Appointed Special Advocates takes in children who have been removed from their homes and give them a safe place to stay. The problem, according to Public Relations Chair Caitlin O’Leary, is in order to volunteer you must be 21 years of age, and as college students many are not old enough. So the fundraiser is their way of giving to the cause.
The primary sponsor is Luke’s Locker, a Texas based running and fitness store.
“We started working with them last semester to get the ball rolling,” Myers said. “They’ve just been such a help meeting us at the venue, weekly meetings to just make sure everything is on track.”
Through their website, lukeslocker.com, you can register for the race and through their store until 6 p.m. today.
In their first 5K last year Theta raised $16,000 with about 150 participants.
“So our goals this year was basically to double everything,” O’Leary said. “Both participants and money, which we’ve done.”
As of Thursday 230 people were signed up. They expect to reach their goal of 300 by race day.
After the race there will be a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses, as well as venders.
Participants check in from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. If you want to register on the morning of you have until 8 a.m.
