An arrest warrant has been issued for SMU junior David M. Woolsey for alleged possession of illegal controlled substances. The charge is a second-degree felony.
Police responded to a smoke detector signal from the Kappa Sigma fraternity house at 1:50 a.m. on Oct. 31. The officers smelled marijuana coming from the room and after getting a search warrant entered the room.
In the room, police found suspected cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy and drug paraphernalia. No people were present.
The SMU Police Department is heading the investigation with help from University Park Police, Highland Park Police and the North Texas High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force.
“Through its recent Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention, SMU has reaffirmed that use of illegal substances on campus will not be tolerated,” SMU President R. Gerald Turner said in a statement. “It is unfortunate if there are some who choose to violate the law and jeopardize the safety of themselves and those around them. All members of the University community must be proactive in uncovering illegal activity and ridding the campus of those engaged in it. I am calling on our students in particular to help us identify any individual or group involved with illegal drugs on campus.”
Right now the investigation is in the “fact-finding” stage according to SMU Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Lori White. Once information has been gathered decisions will be made about what the university will do aside from the legal repercussions.
As of yesterday, the authorities had not found Woolsey. SMU PD is asking for anyone with information to please contact the authorities. The anonymous crime tip line is 214-768-2TIP.
According to their official statement, “Kappa Sigma fraternity is currently looking into this matter. Since it is an on-going investigation by authorities, it would be inappropriate to comment at this time.”
