Since 2006, the Mustangs have only won one road game, that did not change this weekend.
The Naval Academy ran all over SMU on route to a 34-7 victory at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Midshipmen became the first team in 11 years to not attempt a pass in the game.
A constant downpour hampered the Mustangs offense, but did not appear to affect the Midshipmen.
Third string quarterback Ricky Dobbs led Navy to 404 yards rushing with 224 yards of his own on 42 carries and reached the end zone four times.
The Mustangs did not have the same success in the running game. SMU carried the ball 11 times for -13 yards, including two sacks of quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell.
The Mustangs would finish the game with just 144 total offense yards on 39 plays. Navy ran 77 plays for 404 yards, averaging 1.5 more yards a play than the Mustangs.
Mitchell threw for 157 yards, completing 16 of 28 passes with a touchdown and an interception. Aldrick Robinson was on the receiving end of Mitchell’s touchdown pass, a four-yard pass in the third quarter.
Those would be the only points SMU would get, and they got the ball at the Navy 12-yard-line off a Dobbs fumble recovered by Will Bonilla. Pete Fleps led the defense with a career-high 23 tackles, tied for fourth most in a game by a Conference USA player.
Mitchell’s interception gives him 19 on the season, which is the most in the NCAA
The Mustangs have not held an opponent under 30 points this season, for the third time were held to just seven points and for the fourth time lost by more than 20 points.
SMU has a bye this weekend before returning to Ford Stadium for Homecoming against Memphis on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
