The annual Multicultural Showcase featured various fraternities and sororities available to different cultures on campus Thursday night. The event began with a PowerPoint presentation outlining the requirements, missions and opportunities of the numerous Greek organizations.
First-year students James Parker and Jasmine Iglehart said the presentation was helpful in describing what the Multicultural Greek Council was all about.
After this presentation by Jasmine Alvarado, one of the members of the Multicultural Greek Council Executive Board, the floor opened for interested students to browse the information accessible in the booths.
There were a total of five booths, all offering something unique. The missions of the fraternities and sororities range from obtaining a college degree (Omega Delta Phi fraternity) to completing community service (Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority).
While each Greek organization may cater toward a specific culture, all races are invited and welcomed into the fraternities and sororities.
For example, the Sigma Phi Omega sorority was originally created for Asian-American women in the 1940s amidst sentiments left after World War II, but is now open to women of any race.
The same goes for the Alpha Psi Lambda Co-Ed Fraternity which was created by Latin Americans, but now welcomes any man or woman.
Overall, the Multicultural Greek Council and its Greek organizations aim to promote inclusiveness for all races by celebrating the various cultures. While some of the organizations may have been formed for certain races, no one is ever turned away or discriminated against because they are of a different culture or race.
