Three SMU football players will head to the first annual All-American Challenge: Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Bowl on Feb. 2. The Bowl will be held at the Sun Bowl in El Paso and will be aired at 9 p.m. on CSTV.
According to the El Paso Times, the point of the game is “to prove Texas’ boast that it plays the best football in the country.”
Mustang seniors Ryan Kennedy, Justin Rogers and Joe Sturdivant will be among the 80 players to participate in the Bowl. Selections were made based on collegiate performance, draft eligibility and coach recommendations.
Players for the Texas team are students who have ties to a Texas college or high school, while students playing for The Nation come from various colleges and regions of the country. Former NFL coach Buddy Ryan has been chosen to lead The Nation while current UTEP head coach Mike Price will head up the Texas team.
The organizers are making sure this Bowl game is Texas-sized. Although the game is the main event, a week’s worth of activities, including team charity visits to local hospitals, a Legends Golf tournament hosted by former Dallas Cowboy Randy White and autograph sessions are also scheduled. The Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Bowl will also serve as a chance for NFL scouts to see some of the country’s most eligible talent all at once.
Kennedy, a native of Beeville, Texas, will play tight end for the Texas team. He played on the Mustang offense for three seasons. His teammate, Justin Rogers, will play defense for Texas in the game. The Greenville, Texas native played defensive end for the Mustangs for three years as well. Sturdivant will join Rogers on the Texas defense as a safety. Originally from Lilburn, Ga., Sturdivant has also played three years for the Mustangs during which he garnered multiple C-USA awards.
