While Winter Break typically calls forth images of snow covered houses and fields, most students at SMU probably didn’t have a chance to experience any of that this holiday. If you’re one of those that were stuck at home or at work for most of break, here’s a chance to catch up on all the fun that the lucky ones got to experience.
The SMU Outdoor Adventure Center is hosting a four-day ice-climbing trip to Colorado that will be packed with nothing but snow, ice climbing and fun. If the Climbing Center at Dedman is getting to be too easy, this is the perfect opportunity to put those newly acquired skills to the test.
“Ice climbing is not a “common” outdoor pursuit and for most of us here in Dallas, Texas, the opportunities are rare,” said David Chambers, Associate Director Programs/Outdoor Adventures. “For those wanting a little more ‘extreme’ to their outdoor experience, this is one of those opportunities.”
The participants will leave on Friday, Jan. 30 near sunrise and arrive at their base camp in Alamosa, Colorado. The actual ice climbing will be done in and around the San Luis Valley and San Juan National Forest while the nights will be spent at Adams State University, located in Alamosa.
Ice climbing is an extreme sport and does carry an inherent risk with it. However, SMU and the Outdoor Adventure Center have done their best to prevent any harm and dangers associated with ice climbing. Still, due to the short duration of actual climbing time, there will not be any basic climbing instruction. Therefore, knowledge of how to climb and some of the basic systems involved with climbing are the preferred experience levels.
“Ice climbing, as any climbing or outdoor adventure activity, has inherent risk and hazards,” said Chambers. “We have done our best to minimize the potential risks and hazards by hiring experienced guides who will provide the proper supervision, instruction, equipment and manage risks with our group.”
The price for the trip is $285, which includes transport, lodging, ice climbing equipment and guides. Participants are responsible for their own food during the trip. It is also recommended that participants bring a sleeping bag and a pillow, as the university they will be staying with will not provide sheets for the students. Due to the extreme cold and conditions, the Outdoor Adventure Center will be very vigilant about participant clothing and gear.
Space is limited to 11 people, so hurry to the Outdoor Adventure Center, located in Dedman, and reserve a spot. The deadline to sign up is January 26. For more information, contact David Chambers or visit the Outdoor Adventure Center’s website.
“As my good friend and guide tells me, ‘it ain’t that hard’,” Chambers said.
