From Wednesday’s homecoming kick-off pep rally and floatbuilding to tug-of-war and the Mustang football team’s efforton Saturday, homecoming on the Hilltop was once again a specialweekend.
Much of the build-up surrounding this weekend every year is theexcitement around homecoming royalty. This year, Kappa Kappa GammaBritt Moen won homecoming queen, while Pi Kappa Alpha PresidentDustin Odham came away with the homecoming king crown. The honorswere given out at halftime of the football game.
Earlier in the day, the homecoming candidates rode along infloats built by members of their organizations in the annualhomecoming day parade down Hillcrest Avenue. The floats weredesigned after the theme “Let the Good Times Roll,” andincluded Gamma Phi Beta and Omega Delta Phi’s “RollingOut the Red Carpet,” and Chi Omega and Kappa AlphaOrder’s “Rolling on a River.” Led by Peruna, theSMU Cheer and Pom Squads and the Mustang Band, the 10 a.m. paradedrew many students out of bed to cheer on their representatives.Members of greek organizations were especially strong inattendance. Their attendance counted towards theirorganizations’ overall “Spirit Points.”
Spirit points were given out to organizations all week forattending and donating their time to events like the Carter BloodDrive, the homecoming barbeque and tug-of-war. While the combinedChi Omega/Kappa Alpha Order team won the tug-of-war competition,Gamma Phi Beta and Omega Delta Phi came out victorious in theSpirit Point standings.
Homecoming culminated with a strong effort by the Mustangfootball team. Despite a great defensive first half, which gave thePonies a 5-3 halftime lead, Fresno State came away with a victory, defeating SMU 11-20.
After the game, many alumni returned to their old stompinggrounds, visiting both fraternity and sorority chapters, reminiscing about their days on the Hilltop.
Overall, “Homecoming on the Hilltop” was a weekendto remember.
