Help is here for the holidays! The Career Center is here to giveyou, SMU students, assistance in answering that oh-so-worrisomequestion, “So, what do you plan to do for the rest of yourlife?”
We feel your pain! We’ve thought about the fact that youwere held tightly by the parental reigns until they popped thatproverbial question. And we understand that sometimes thosequestions come with strings attached.
When you do tell them your ideas, some answers from parents haveechoed clear back to the hallowed halls on the hill, “Ohthat? Really? Well, you know our family has always been (doctors, lawyers, in the arts).”
Actually, it’s one of the biggest questions you willanswer in your life. It’s a decision that takes many people alot of time and soul-searching to answer.
We, at the Hegi Family Career Development Center, will talk toyou about what you want to do with your life and we will hear whatyou say.
And if you don’t have a clue about what that is,we’ll honestly search with you personally or with careerassessments until we find what’s right for you.
We’ll help you discover the career that fits yourinterests, values, preferences and working style.
Too much to accomplish before Dec. 25? Not really. If we cannotfine tune it down to that one perfect career by that time,we’ll at least get an idea of a career field for you. Thenyou could answer the all-ominous holiday question with, forexample, “Well, right now, marketing is getting myattention.”
If your family insists on information, tell them you’vegot an appointment in the Career Center to finalize thedecision.
If they still won’t let you out of the hot seat, try,”I hear the Career Center has internships abroad. It would benice to spend a semester in Spain.”
We are here to help. Take advantage of your rights as an SMUstudent and come by.
We are in the Hughes Trigg Student Center and our 20-minutecounseling sessions are: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday throughThursday and 1 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
The appointments are on a first come, first serve basis, butwe’ll try our best to find a time for you.
