SMU police are looking for information concerning a robbery that occurred on Jan. 7 in the Moore Hall parking lot.
A student reported that her laptop and other personal items were stolen when a heavy-set black female with yellowish-brown hair grabbed her bag and then ran toward a waiting car which then turned onto Mockingbird Lane from Bishop Boulevard. The student was not harmed in the robbery.
“As far as suspects go, we don’t have one,” Chief of Police Richard A. Shafer said. “We thought we had a lead after a similar robbery occurred at a Starbucks in Dallas, but the two cases are not related. The hope is that they will pawn the laptop; we have ways of tracking things like that.”
The car has been identified as a newer model, four-door, black Nissan, possibly a Maxima or Altima. The student described the car’s driver as a black male with short hair.
Information concerning the case should be directed to the SMU Police Department at 214-SMU-3388. Anonymous tips regarding the robbery can be given by calling 214-SMU-2TIP or by visiting smu.edu/2tip.
SMU police are urging students to consider their safety at all times. Students should be alert to their surroundings, specifically in parking lots and garages.
Safety tips include having keys ready when approaching a car and locking the door after entering a car. In the event of an attack, Shafer says that it’s best to cooperate and then call 911 as soon as possible.
“Don’t try to resist,” Shafer said. “It’s not worth getting seriously injured over your property. It’s a lot easier to replace your property than your life. Don’t take any chances.”
