June Jones arrived in Dallas at 6 a.m. Sunday morning on a flight from Honolulu, Hawaii.
Jones was expected to be in Dallas on Saturday, but was unable to get a flight until Sunday. The 72-hour deadline that SMU supposedly gave to Jones would have expired on Saturday, but due to flight restrictions it is expected that he will meet with SMU officials on Sunday.
Reports from The Honolulu Advertiser say that Jones has sent his resignation letter to the University of Hawaii according to Jones’ close friend Al Souza. Although Herman Frazier, Hawaii’s athletic director says that he has not received a letter nor has he heard from Jones.
In the resignation letter, according to Souza, Jones listed several complaints about things he and his staff had requested from athletic department and had not received.
If the report of Jones’ resignation is true that places SMU as the frontrunner for Jones. When SMU offered Jones the job, Jones’ agent Leigh Steinberg referred to possible offers from an NFL team.
If Jones accepts the offer from SMU he will become the highest paid coach in Conference USA. According to ESPN, Hawaii’s counter offer would have made Jones the highest paid coach in the Western Athletic Conference.
Reports have also indicated that if Jones decides to bring any of his assistants along with him from Hawaii that they will also receive a significant pay raise. Although reports have also indicated that Jones is not leaving because he did not feel he was being paid well enough, he was not pleased with how the athletic department was being run.
UpdateTerry Bowden’s publicist said the ex-Auburn coach did not contact SMU before head coach Phil Bennett was fired. Kim Shiff said the coach did have interest in the job but said the school contacted Bowden first.
