The story surrounding the alleged murder of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach has captivated America with its bizarre storyline and seemingly never-ending twists and turns. Considering the history between Lauterbach and her alleged attacker, Cpl. Cesar Laurean, the question becomes: Was there any way the military could have prevented this murder?
Murder is obviously not a crime that is typically predictable, but the history between Lauterbach and Laurean is undoubtedly unique. Laurean was accused of raping Lauterbach and had been issued a restraining order preventing him from coming in contact with his alleged victim.
However, the restraining order expired, and her allegations against Laurean were not taken seriously by the Marine Corps.
It is impossible to blame anyone for this murder, except the murderer. However, the Marine Corps could have taken the matter more seriously by at minimum continuing to make sure the two did not come in contact.
In Laurean’s defense, the alleged murder took place off base and outside their domain. But, how can an allegation like rape against a fellow officer be taken so lightly?
The main defense taken by the Marine Corps has been that since Lauterbach said she did not feel threatened, there was nothing they could do. Even if a victim does not feel threatened, is that any reason to let Lauterbach come and go as he pleases?
As an institution, the military is a symbol of America that is supposed to have some of the toughest standards for entrance both mentally and physically. Recruits go through numerous tests and screenings before being granted admittance.
With wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is possible that the once-high standards of one of America’s most respected institutions are falling in the dire need for recruits. Laurean is only 21 years old and a recruit at the peak of troop shortages.
Since there is not much personal information about Laurean, it is impossible to say whether or not the Marine Corps knew he was mentally troubled. There may have been no signs that would point to him being a potential murderer.
This could very well be a case that the Marine Corps could not prevent. Hopefully there was nothing the military could have done to prevent it. Even so, as more information comes out they will need to answer some tough questions about their role in this tragedy.
