The Mustangs spent their final weekend of the season in Houston playing against Houston and Rice. In the first game, the Mustangs needed all five games to win, but got the 3-2 victory over the Cougars.
Caitlin Rainbird, Kathryn Wilkerson and Madison Hill each recorded double doubles. Wilkerson’s double double gave her the team lead with 18 on the season. Candice Davis recorded 27 digs and accounted for one-quarter of the Mustangs’ total digs in the match.
Against Rice, the Mustangs did not have the same success.
Rainbird led SMU in kills with 12, while Wilkerson and Natalie Peters each tallied nine.
The Mustangs will face the No. 8 seeded East Carolina in the first round to see who will play against top seeded Marshall on Friday.
SMU and The East Carolina Pirates matched up once during the regular season. The Pirates defeated the Mustangs in that match 3-2 at ECU on Oct. 28.
It was against the Pirates that Davis set the school record of 35 digs in one match. She has had another 35-dig game since then.
The game will be the third of four games played today. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
