Between Facebook, iPods and cell phones, in comparing the daily lives of college students now to the lives of college students a decade ago, one thing is clear: Technologies in communications and arts are shifting. Because of this shift, students who plan to pursue these fields have to keep up with these fast-paced changes.
With this thought in mind, Patty Alvey, Director of the Temerlin Advertising Institute, and Sean Griffin, Assistant Professor of Cinema-Television, are bringing several key executives in the communications and arts fields in “Revolutions per Minute: Emerging and Converging Media Technologies,” an event that will help students learn how to use technology to break into the business.
“I think most of our students will enjoy the opportunity to meet the president of Fox Television, or the producer of Ugly Betty, or a senior vice president of the largest talent agency in the world [the William Morris Agency],” says Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, Jose Bowen.
The senior vice president of the William Morris Agency, Lewis Henderson, is a graduate of the SMU class of 1988.
The student forums will also feature several other SMU alumni, including Mary Alice Haney, class of 1993, who is now E! Style’s “Ambush Makeover” host. Alex Griswold, a 2006 SMU graduate, will speak about his current position as national sales coordinator for Spotrunner.com.
Other speakers will include leaders from Microsoft, Yahoo! Studios, Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Reveille Motion Pictures and Around the World Productions among others.
“Revolutions per Minute” is the first event of its kind on the SMU campus and with Meadows’ wide variety of majors, the school provides a perfect platform for such an event. Organizers hope the event will help students applying for jobs gain the upper hand when it comes to these new technologies.
“Revolutions per Minute” is exclusively for SMU students and will take place Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and introductions for the panel and faculty. Two hours of student forums will begin at 10 a.m. in the Owens Art Center, Greer Garson and Umphrey Lee Buildings.
