After splitting a pair of weekend matches, the No. 55 SMU men’s tennis team faces rival Texas Christian University at 6 p.m. tonight in Ft. Worth.
SMU has won four of the last five meetings against the Horned Frogs, including three in a row dating back to the 2005-06 season. The Mustangs picked up an abbreviated 4-1 win last year against TCU, as the contest was already decided before the final two singles matches were completed.
The Mustangs dropped their opening match last weekend to the No. 6-ranked Texas Longhorns, 5-2, at Turpin Tennis Stadium.
They rebounded for a 6-1 victory over the Texas-Pan American Broncs on Sunday.
Against the Longhorns, SMU ran into a lot of talent in singles competition.
In the top singles spot, junior Robin Fahgen (ranked No. 54 nationally) was unable to capitalize in a first set tiebreaker against No. 30 Dimitar Kutrovsky and fell 6-2 in the second set.
Despite picking up a first set win, SMU sophomore Artem Baradach could not keep the momentum alive against Texas’ No. 45 Ed Corrie, who came back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Against the Broncs, SMU swept all three doubles matches to win the point.
In his first action since suffering an injury Feb. 10 against New Orleans, junior Chris Hooshyar teamed with Baradach for an 8-6 victory before Darren Walsh and Adham al-Effendi picked up their eighth consecutive doubles win, 8-4.
Fahgen began the singles matches with a victory over the Broncs’ Aswin Vijayaragavan (6-3, 6-3) to improve his individual record to 8-2.
Freshman David Costa followed suit with a singles win (6-1, 6-1) before Baradach, Hooshyar and Cuadranti each did the same.
