Woman’s Tennis has now had seven consecutive wins after defeating No. 28 rival TCU Wednesday night and improving their record to 18-2. The Mustangs defeated the Horned Frogs 4-3 in a close match, that came down to the final match of the evening when senior Kseniia Tokarieva defeated TCU’s Maria Babanova in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-4).
SMU doubles play set the tone for the match, starting out with impressive wins by the Mustangs. No. 43 ranked duo, and playing at the top spot for the Mustangs freshmen Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova upset against TCU’s No. 23 ranked duo 8-4
While Lesniak and Malyarchikova were performing for the Mustangs, the No. 60 ranked SMU tandem of senior Natalia Bubien and junior Pavi Francis defeating the Horned Frogs duo with an impressive 8-3 win. The Mustangs went on to sweep doubles when the Mustangs pair, Tokarieva and junior Nicole Briceno, defeated their TCU rivals 8-3.
No. 57 Lesniak dropped her first match of the season at the top spot in an upset to No. 84 Harkins. In reaction, senior Natalia Bubien stepped it up for the Mustangs. Fighting through a tough first set, she defeat her TCU foe in the second set (7-6, 6-1).
The Mustangs next match isn’t until March 25, when they will face a double header at home. First the Mustangs will face off against Arkansas-Little Rock at 2 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. face off against DePaul.
